-8/9x * 9x = 2/3 * 9x
-8 = 6x
-8/6 = 6x / 6
-1 1/3 = x
Let's see if that works.
-8 / 9 (-1 1.3) = 2/3
-8 / -12 = 2/3

I understand what you did. I'm confuse. I don't know how the problem is read. What I do know is that we both nailed it. Maybe someone else will answer the question. Or, teachermaria will tell us. But if the problem is read the way you worked it out, would it have been written like this: -8 / 9x = 2/3?

-8/9x = 2/3 > the problem is saying: -8/9 * x = 2/3
Do the opposite of multiplication: Division
-8/9x ÷ -8/9 = 2/3 ÷ -8/9
2/3 * -9/8 > you take the reciprocal of -8/9
x = -18/24 > Reduce
x = -3/4
Check answer: Put -3/4 in place of (x) -8/9 * -3/4 = 2/3
negative * negative = positive > 24/36 = 2/3
reduce 24/36 > 2/3 = 2/3

I think you viewed -8/9x as a fraction? I took it as -8 divided by 9x. Because I did that, I could multiply by 9x and eliminate that, leaving just the -8 = 6X (2/3 * 9 = 6)
The other thing I see is in the first step where you dropped the "x" in the division.
