This remind me of a joke... People who speak two languages are bilingual, people who speak three languages are trilingual, people who speak only one language are American.............

jhhartan -just so funny. You do have the Jane Austen Society over there I heard of late.

Animal, some sign language, some French, an embarrassing meager amount of Spanish

Chinese, Thai, Laotian, and some Japanese.

Far too complex for me to even contemplate. Wow. Saw a very interesting programme on how children learn different languages it was quite extraordinary, wish I could remember it. That old memory thing.

If I ask you the name of the country with the largest number of English-speaking citizens, you would say it's _____?
    Poppy3

Chiangmai - what a brilliant question - it is now would you believe 4.25 AM and I am on my last legs. So far it would seem that The Phillipines are the third largest English Speaking country in the world. A guy rang here once selling something from a company - he was Phillipino during conversation he wanted me to help him with getting a nursing job in the UK - sent me the most amazing pictures from the Phillipines. The thing is everything is relative and it does depend I guess on population - I will check more and get back to you.

I await anxiously for your answer. When you know the answer, you'll realize that we have work cut out for us with respect to knowing and learning foreign languages.

Chian..... : Don't tell me its CHINA !!!!
    Chiangmai

Yes, it's China. There are more people in China that speak English than there are people in the U.S. Thanks, pioneer2.

Also, contrary to what many people here think (the fact that knowing English is good enough), I feel that it's more advantageous to know more languages than just English. Besides, as you all know, a huge percentage of English speakers in America cannot even read and write well with the only language that they DO know.

Be careful, a lot of American jobs are being outsourced to India and the Philippines. Wake up, America, and stay competitive.

A little of this - a little of that - and more this and that.

My pushme-pull me is fluent in this & that..s/he will be glad to traslate

Wait a minute.  American here.  Know TWO languages.   English  and Pig Latin.  So there !!!

Just a little bit of spainish as well as chineese, just enough to get by dealing with them. eso es todo'''''''''''.

There is no need to know any other language than English. If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it is good enough for me.

Jesus Christ knows all languages, but spoke Aramaic to his people. :)

English is the easiest language to learn - guess this is why it is so universal although the French wanted theirs.

The JC quote was from Bill Bryson's book 'Mother Tongue'. it was supposedly said by a US politician. I don't know which one but I bet he was a Republican.

You are a kook aren't you! What a fine example,I love it.

English may be easier for people who already speak a Germanic language, but learning English for Spanish speakers sucks!
Spanish is the easiest language to speak because all of the accents are marked and rules of pronunciation do not change from word to word. Although sentence structure and learning past-tense take a lot of practice.

english is the international one>>>>>>>see that without it i ll never answer you

Que barba! Va necesitar una gran pared.

I only know English and Spanish.

There is a common thread that joins all languages and extends to include all life in its common embrace. That one voice is understood by all.
