A desktop PC normally will have a longer life than a notebook, especially if you intend to leave it on 24/7.

Is that due to overheating in the notebook or something else?

@mooci: You didn't give much information as to what you would be doing on the computer, but the shorter life is mostly due to overheating. A notebook is much cheaper than a desktop, and if it will do the job for you, it may be the best choice. I have a netbook, a laptop and a desktop, and I much prefer using the desktop, but much of that has to do with the keyboard and other options.

The notebook will be fine. Just make sure you get a cooling pad for it.
