    A barometer is and instrument use  to measure atmospheric pressure,much like an altimeter use in aviation to calculate your elevation. The higher you are the pressure decrease tell you how high you are in the atmosphere.

    a measurement of the air pressure which generally drops as storms approach due to the change in air temp (pressure as cold air is more dense) also a good indicator of the strength of the storm as the storm passes the barometric pressure rises
