I have a Garmin GPS and experienced something similar. In my case, it was the power cord that, although the red light was lit, the cable was not keeping it properly charged. I took a USB cable and hooked it into my computer to charge it. After that it worked fine. Try the reboot as suggested by Colleen, but also consider looking into whether or not the cable is allowing it to charge enough to function properly.
