The cost of a security can be broken down into 2-3 parts, depending on where you live. Firstly, it's the cost per share times the number of shares of a security. For example, 100 shares of General Electric at $19 would be 19 x 100 or $1900. If the commission or transaction cost is $50 and the General Excise Tax is $3, the whole cost is: 1900 + 50 + 3 = $1953. Hence, when you do your taxes when the security is sold, your cost basis would be $1953 or $19.53 per share.
