In the U.S. it is typically a 5 digit number that is assigned to a known or recognized location, making general delivery to that location more efficient. Occasionally a dash and more numbers are assigned to more specific locations or post office boxes handling large amounts of mail.

It is the (Zone Improvement Plan) ZIP code used by the United States Postal Service. The ZIP Code format is five numerical digits. The ZIP+4 code includes the ZIP Code plus four digits which reference an address.
