    What does 'dreadful tales of hanging, plank walking' mean

      The "hanging" is killing someone by tieing a noose round their neck and choking them to death. Walking the plank is placing a plank at side of ship out into the water and forcing someone to walk along it and fall in the water resulting in them drowning.
