It is okay to use a knife and fork to eat your salad. Only cut up one bite of salad at a time just as you would with meat. The French people do frown at cutting salad with a knife. They prefer to fold their salad as many times as it takes to fit onto the fork. It's an art like learning to twirl spaghetti onto a fork.
