      WD-40 will remove the oxide but will leave a dark "stain" where the rust was, at this point then the electrolytic rust removal should get rid of the stain!

        Check out 'electrolytic rust removal' on Google. You need a battery charger, a bucket, a solution of washing soda and a piece of scrap iron as anode.
