I'm assuming you are referring to smog?  I don't live in SoCal but times have changed, California has the strictest policies and laws governing pollution now so as a result, our environment has really gotten much better.  I am in Northern CA, we have mountains east and west, I am in the valley. We have no problem seeing the mountains in either direction, maybe because so many Priuses here i dunno but we also have massive traffic problems.  I have a 64 mile commute each day to work, it's not fun but at least it doesn't stink.. :)

I've had a hard time for a while.

I couldn't see the LA mountains from New Jersey, and I can't see them much better from North Carolina since I moved either. :(
