    what can one lose by giving up cantonese chinese for manderine chinese language wise

    As far as i know Cantonese is only spoken in Hong Kong, now that H.K.is part of the Peoples Republic of China, you would now expect to speak Mandarin as it is the official  language of China., apart from learning another  language, i can't see you losing anything.
