How to protect your electronics against an atmospheric Electro Magnetic Pulse (EMP)?

It is theorized that one or more atomic devices detonated  over the US will render unhardened (civilian) electronics like computers, network switches, power supplies (portable and otherwise), cell phones, TV's, radios of all sorts, HVAC units, amplifiers, civilian radar, autos, trains, trucks and most other modern conveniences that we depend on for a civilized existence to become permanently damaged beyond repair. What can we, as civilians, do to protect our electronics immediately, and over the long haul?

If atomic devises are detonated over the USA, the last thing I'm going to worry about is my electronic devices.
