sometimes TV stations report a "figure" on the number of viewers having watched a particular program. How is that figure calculated?

Is it just a guess? Is it inflated just to imply the TV station has a " must see " show to attract viewers?

One of the ways to calculate most watched programs is by the Nielsen Rating.   As a matter of fact, I took part in it one time back in 1992.  After I agreed to do it they sent me a diary type notebook and I had to write down every show I watched and rate each show.  I don't remember how I rated them now but it was fun.  It was for a one week period.
