Assuming sound card means you are driving your speakers through your computer. Check your wiring, look for a short or something not plugged in all the way.. try headphones, can you hear through headphones?? Sometimes mixing gets a glitch, try rebooting. And about the headphones, sometimes on some headphones with an adapter, they get stuck in the output jack...
HP laptops with SRS premium sound had this problem, if you have an HP, you might need to upgrade the driver. That was the only fix..
