Hi conron1.  When I was a little girl my grandmother had an avocado tree.  It was the best climbing tree ever in the world.  Now I pay almost $3.00 for an avocado that just falls off trees.  Well, back to your question.  Get a small mason jar and fill it with water.  Push (very gently) toothpicks in 2 or 3 areas of the fruit pit so it will sit on the rim of the glass with the bottom low enough to settle in the water.  It will start growing roots in the water and eventually green stems and leaves will sprout from the avocado seed.  It's a miracle.  r/yvonne57.

I figured if you can grow them in water, you should be able to grow them in dirt and I have several growing in my yard as I type. They die back in the winter and regrow come spring...

to grow an avacado seed, you first remove the seed from the avacado and put four toothpicks in the sides the seeds. then you put the seed in a glass jar with water all the way to the top. add water everyday and it will grow.

I too learned the water jar and toothpicks but it has been 3 months and no root- in past yrs I had a root start in about 1 mo? could I just go ahead and plant in dirt then?
