Johnson was basically on a campaign tour with Kennedy. President Kennedy had trouble with southern voters and Johnson was a powerful politician with extensive reach through out the south which was the same reason that he was chosen by Kennedy for the vice presidential position. The trip was an attempt to solidify his position for the next election.
