the type of conjunctivitis called  ' ' Pink Eye ' '   is caused by a bacteria. It is cured by anti -biotic eye ointment. I've never heard of viral conjunctivitis.  But, conjunctivitis means inflammation of the eyelids. So, if they're irritated by stronge contact lens cleaner, or something like that, you can get conjunctivitis that is neither bacterial or a virus. When I was 17, I got a hell of a case of conjunctivitis and burned the corneas of my eyes from using a sunlamp too close to my face, and for too long.  The doc used anti- infammatory eye drops for my eyes. It cleared up.
