Can they just burst on their own or do they have to be traumatized....?

    Both.
The fact that as we age,our skins get thinner so relatively minor bangs and scratches can result in a rupture because varicose veins are close to the surface of the skin.
Ruptures can also occur spontaneously due to veins being overstretched as a result of excess pressure caused by obesity or high blood pressure.
A ruptured vein is dangerous and can lead to dearth because of clotting or internal bleeding.

Note that Colleen said the skin would have to tear for the bleeding to be external.  They can also break and bleed subcutaneously

See your Dr. with this if it becomes very inflamed and painful, as you may need an antibiotic as it can become infected if the skin is broken or even the area where the blood has built up.
