None of you remember anything. Betting on the match was big. Everything imaginable was for sale, trade or part of a side bet including your girls pleasures or some one else. Wine and grog was carried about by slaves and sold by their masters by the cup. Iced wine …like a snow cone was popular but expensive. Ice was hauled off the mountains in winter and stored in the catacombs with straw for use in summer. Hot soups in winter in the arena. Fruit was prolifically available and meats. Brawl were common and various drugs were always close at hand, even lethal drugs for those bent on suicide or visiting the vomitorium. Fist fights and wrestling were common events. Anything to please the crowds. It was entertainment primarily. Getting killed in the arena was primarily for criminals. Excess slaves who could not be sold were often set upon by lions rather than killed in combat. Lions were used as household guards. The lions of a household were raised by the household and they were generally treated as pets. The slaves and owners played with the cubs and most offered little protection from intruders. So to get the lions to attack and kill people they were taken to the arena, starved and beaten until they were angry enough to attack and then set upon some luckless slaves to kill and eat. All before the drunken mob.
