Honestly, it depends. If it's an essay or paper, or maybe just a paragraph, then read the whole thing. After that, just ask yourself what this reading was trying to tell you. That should be the main idea. If it's a story, look at where the problem(s) or conflict(s) is, then look at the resolution(s), or where the problem is fixed. Try to sum up what happened or what the main character did wrong. Also, looking at the end, there should be a statement where there is no bravado, like: "This is my story. There are many twists and turns, ups and downs, but of course, none of us can control it." It's a very strong statement, and will usually stand out. Hope this helps!
