It depends on a number of things. The age of the relative wishing to gain green card status. The relation of him/her to the US citizen who is petitioning him/her (child, parent, etc). The country he/her is immigrating from. There are four countries which have an extremely long waiting list (Mexico, India, Philippines and the fourth I believe is China).
Your approval letter should have referenced the above.
