Transactions
Record all transactions. All transactions should be recorded as they occur. Don't forget to include transactions such as ATM withdrawals, debit card purchases and automated monthly payments.

Balance
Balance your checking account register. Calculate your balance by adding the deposits, referred to as credits, and subtracting withdrawals, commonly called debits. Note all outstanding checks that have not been cashed yet.

Reconcile
Obtain your checking account statement. Whether you receive your statement via mail or access it online, it's important to reconcile your checking account register against the official statement. If discrepancies are found, you can likely see where the mistake was made.
