There may be many causes for swollen ankles: kidney failure, birth control pills, heart diseases, drug abuse may cause a swollen ankles side effect, varicose veins, phlebitis (veins inflammation, usually in legs), obesity, liver diseases, high salt intake, hormone replacement therapy may cause inflammation in legs, ankle sprain/injury, allergies, pre menstruation tension, long periods of sitting or standing, arthritis, prostate cancer in men might be a reason, ankylosing spondilosis (inflammation of joints between spinal bones), and dermatitis are only some of the causes.
In order to know what the cause of your swollen ankles is, I think it is best to set an appointment with a doctor, or at least ask one on a medical forum, where doctors answer questions regarding medical conditions.
