As to whether they are in pain, they are probably stressed when doing any walking, certainly when walking on inclines, and what is their "quality of life" that is the question.  When it gets to that question, hopefully you will not be like most pet owners, that is selfishly ignoring the pets' quality and only looking at your loss.  Do the right thing, and consider the pet and euthanize when time is right for the pet!  It is not easy, I know, I have been there, but do not let the pet suffer.  I wish we could do this for humans!  Where is Dr. Kevorkian when I will need him?
