    The most common method was and in some places is as follows;
    Have the steel surface clean.
    Cover it with wax.
    Write/draw on the waxed surface.
    Cover the writing/drawing with sulfuric acid for as long as you
    needed it. It will create a small channel.
    Remove the wax and wash the steel and voila! you have an engraved
    steel !.

    If you want to get fancy, then cover the engraving/sketch with gold wire and hammer it.

    Now, you will call it DAMASQUINO. since the method was invented in Damascus, Syria hundreds of years ago.

    There are still many place where it is done, Syria, Japan and
    Spain. In the USA I think they now use a Laser drawing beam instead of acid to engrave the swords of the cadets et cetera.

    Hope this helps;

    Sir;G.O.
