is it True if it is "written"?

I note with interest that every time someone mentions "god" or "jesus" it is usually backed up by the phrase "it is written"!
if you are so convinced by what is written, why don't you believe anything else that has been written?
there is so much more enlightened information and literature in this world, but religious folk seem oblivious to this fact!

plus i also note that Christians especially cherry pick the bits of the bible they personally agree with and ignore so much, how can you preach something you don't completely agree with?

would you honestly say that you live by the bible as it is "written"? I doubt it!

No one can live as the bible askes.... we are all sinners... that is where grace comes in.... I the beging was the word and the word was God... so yes we beleive the bible i nits interty as it is written... We will never be who god what us to be... it is impossible

    IluvJesus

    Well said Jenn.TU

    PEOPLELOVER

WELL YOU GOT THE "NITS" PART CORRECT

I take the bible as a whole Old Testament and New Testament King James Version, yes even though my own toes get stepped on by the word frequently, it is still a learning and growing experience for me and I hope to continue learning and growing to be a better person each and every day until I die and move on to be with Jesus.

Strangely, everybody has made good points here. But which is true and which is false?

The Apostle Paul writing to Timothy wrote:

16 All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work.

Either that is true, or it is not true. Can we agree on one or the other?

If it is not true why have so many millions of people wasted their lives down the centuries copying it as professional scribes translators and teachers, and why have so many died defending it? Why is it the worlds most widely distributed book translated into something like 2,000 languages? There must be something about this book wriiten by Jews that is very important surely?

Maybe we should all read it again with open minds to find out what its about?

Is it historically accurate? The religious hypercrits of Jesus day did not like to hear what Jesus or his apostles had to say at all, so we read:

(Luke 19:39-40) 39 However, some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him: “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 But in reply he said: “I tell YOU, If these remained silent, the stones would cry out.”

Do the stones cry out? Yes they do. Countless millions have travelled the middle east to view the abundance of archeological evidence that the cities and civilisations recorded in the Bible are actually there--- AND in spite of the sceptics and the criics---- Yes they are!

Does the Bible expect you to swallow every thing down as factual everything your local minister of priest says without question? No it does not!

(1 John 4:1) 4?Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression, but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God, because many false prophets have gone forth into the world.

But does the Bible tell us what the future will be even after we die?
Yes it does, but it does not make it easy. The greatest teacher of all time could not convince the Jewish nation that their God would permit his holy city to be destroyed by Roman armies.
But now that is also a fact of history written in stone on mount Zion in Jerusalem and in the Roman forum on a stone frieze high up on the Arch of Titus. Jesus prophesy was indeed fulfilled 36 years after his death.

But the above is only a thumb nail of the masses of evidence contained in this much maligned book.
But are those who do not believe, are you prepared to change your view point?
And those of you who say you do believe, are you prepared to cleans yourselves from false religious stories and practices inserted by false teachers in sheeps clothing? Are you prepared to supply accurate factual knowledge to your listeners?

3 This means everlasting life, their taking in knowledge of you, the only true God, and of the one whom you sent forth, Jesus Christ. John 17

Either there are other JWs on this forum or you are voting for yourself. If the Bible is contaminated or much maligned then I implore all to discard it. If God inspired the writers, then I am convinced He would safeguard it's contents. Not to say that it is exactly as the original authors wrote, but safe enough that a student of the Bible will come to salvation, if he so desires in his heart. If the Bible has been tampered with to the extent that we need a New Bible, I say, "eat drink and be merry, for tomorrow you will die."

Mitchell, You should be aware that the site does not allow you to vote for yourself.See below

Yes, the bible was written by man, and inspired by the christian version of god, but spiritual truth is subjective to the individual. That is why belief is so critical. Don't talk about truth and god in the universal objective sense. How many people have to die before we learn that?

    leeroy

okay Mindblade, I though you said you were over the crusades, and the Salem witch trials? Forgiveness is divine, I know you can do it buddy.

The bible was written by humans about incidents that happened many centuries ago. The information was conveyed from one generation to the other and so the stories became distorted and unbelievable. If you whisper something in someone's ear and they in turn whisper in another person's year, the story changes as it proceeds down the line and so I believe has happened with the stories in the bible. Of course, religious people would call this statement blasphemous.

    Mindblade16

The whole religion is a circle. You have to have faith because you have to have faith? Because God says so? Because its written in a book?

The BIBLE was written by people inspired by GOD. How would explain different people writing the same story from their point of view and not having any thing not agreeable with the other? (new testament) The prophets from the old testament that prophecies the future and was right on?

I take the Bible as a whole.... With the undersanding that it is an old text with many translations and translators. i beleive the God gives me disernment so I may better understand his will and His word... I am not the type to take the word of others .... about ANYTHING.

    Grit Savage

"I am not the type to take the word of others .... about ANYTHING."

I pity you for your lack of interest in the words of others! I think it must be so bizzare and constricting having such a narrow view on life!

    Grit Savage

im just poking with your own stick randy! ;-)

    Headless Man

Do you have interest in the truth of the BIBLE. Love, Randy

    doublehelix

"you are not the type to take the words of others' i'm sorry but the bible is 'the word of others' like you said , you do understand that it has been changed with translations and translators ;]

Just because something is written doesn't make it true. I'm tall and handsome. Unfortunately, that last statement isn't true either.

Very well thank you... It is amazing.

    Grit Savage

good for you girl. how did you do your research? was it all "written" or do you have hard evidence?

    :-)

    Jenn

Read other books of the time... Researh anthropolicial customes and traditions. It reallly does all come to getther when you take it as it historical value.

It is not that I am disinterested.. I am anal... I have to research, and understand before I can except others iterpritation. And I rather like myself. But thanks for playing.

    Grit Savage

So I gather you have done extensive research on the bible, how did that go?

ahhh, the world is filled with ignorance, fear and DEBATE. i just want to understand; the world were living is has so so so many religions from small ones to big ones, for example indians believe that hundreds of gods exist, each for a specific purpose, islam and christianity believe in one god, chinese believe in budhhas, i mean seriuosly were talking about GOD,the creator of the whole world, it's not a game, so do we fill our lives by debating that our god is this and your god is this, you bring me miracles and texts, the other brings you the same. but then again what's the point of arguenig your going to tell me it's faith, well keep telling yourself it's faith, but all i see it as, believing what you want to believe. ummm, also i've been talking about this with my parents arguing wether jesus is the son of god or just another prophet, as far as i can remember i see god as a great creator, and having a son just makes that whole greatness image of god distorted, but i guess i'll do my research more.

"What is written," is a pretty broad statement.   Generally speaking, just because a thing is written does not necessarily mean it is the truth.  Nothing written in books are written in cement, their ideas evolve may even inspire others, to their own revelations or ideas.  If you are refering to Bibles all the more challenge it, what does it mean what doesn't it mean, squeeze it for all it has to offer, beyond the literial.  For a word clothes or represents a conscious idea and it is this idea we seek to hear.

After all it is just a marvelous book of Advanced Physics, full of formulas seeking solutions, though they just happen to be verbal formulas, called metaphors, parables and such.  Each and every one embodies its own solution and in the understanding guide the way to a practical application in everyday living.  To Understand it is to hear its inspiring Spirit therein.  The truth is the Spirit is never stagnated by the histories of men who ever seek to imprison it, but it is ever progessive in the evolving consciousnesses of men form Age to Age.

I hear what you are saying. First off I believe in God and Jesus 100%. However, the bible was written by man and the church picked and choose what was going to be in and out of the bible. But my faith in God allows me to accept that certain things in and out of the bible might not be totally accurate but his unconditional love will pardon me if I ask for forgiveness of my sins and mistakenly believe or disbelieve parts of the bible.

I think there is an old saying that goes something like this: Believe nothing that U hear, half what is written, and all that U see. Is this right guys?

    Mitchell

Benjamin Franklin said. "Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see."

As a historian, I look at documents and try to place them in context by getting as many primary documents as I can find concerning any specific thing. The problem with bibles as we know them today, is that they are not primary documents. The original documents were written in old languages. If I was a Christian, I would learn those written languages and analyze the primary documents where they could be found. With those two issues at hand, the answer is no - unless you take into consideration who the documents were written for, when they were written, and why they were written. Too often, people grab things out of today's bibles and have no idea the context in which they were written, and try to prove points with the quotes. My specialty is the history of science and technology. If I take a dim view of single entries in any primary or secondary document without searching for more, that is the reason. The biblical events are great starting points for discovery, but I want to know a lot more about each story before I take anything as fact.

    Mitchell

You don't have to learn the languages. You can buy an exhaustive concordance and look up every word and their various meanings. There are many theologians and scholars who have learned the old languages and compared documents, such as The Dead Sea Scrolls, and found our English versions to be surprisingly accurate.
