    what are the measurements you snap your chalklines at

    It depends upon what it is that you are trying to do.  For example, if you are nailing plywood on a floor, and the floor joists are located at 24 in. apart, then find one, and snap a line at the other end of that same measurement.  Check it, make sure you are hitting the joists.  If you are, try the next one 24 in. from that one, and snap a line there, test again to insure that you are on the joist.  If all is well, follow this pattern, measure 24 in. from the last, snap the line, and nail along that line, as with the previous ones.  You will be done in no time!  If you need to, do test drillings, or nailings, to establish where the first joist actually is, then follow the pattern...
