My history teacher explained it to us this way, conquering black tribes in Africa sold those whom they over powered in wars to the Dutch (The East-India Trading Company) and they in turn sold them at every port they traded with. So to answer your question, the Africans sold Africans to the highest bidder. Don't mug me on this answer, just repeating what we were taught.

I've always heard that too, that the Africans rounded up those to be sold in slavery .At any rate, slavery occured way before the U.S. did it. It's mentioned quite a bit in the history of old testament biblical times. Not that it makes it right.
I agree, it was wrong. The white man did eventually realize that and changed their ways and many other countries followed. So who ended slavery? The white man.
