A lot has to do with 1, common law and legal language since Middle Age, i.e. law as understood and applied to common people; 2. influence of the church (catholic, protestant, etc) also since old times; and 3. syntetic ability (i.e. in two or three words you say it all). Exemple - Etc. = Et coeatera, and other things, other stuff.
