Having no idea about the company, the country in which you live, nor the retirement plan, it's difficult to even take a guess as to how to answer your question. It just seems logical to me, that the responsibility to contribute would be entirely yours. Are you saying that during more than 20 years, there were no discussions EVER about retirement plans, no meetings, no letters, no notices, no space on your pay stub for "retirement contribution", no talk among co-workers, no suggestions about saving money? Hard to believe!
