From Coloplast:  About half of all people over 50 years of age, and most people over 80 years, have diverticular outpouchings. Normally, they don’t cause any problems.

However, if faeces build up in a diverticular pouch, bacteria may cause a serious infection known as diverticulitis. The infection can often be treated with antibiotics. However, if the diverticular pouch bursts or perforates, surgery and the placement of a stoma is required to prevent the infection from spreading to the peritoneal cavity.
