Ants with wings are male ants and breeding female ants (only few female ants are breeding with the potential to become a queen ants). The winged male ants (called drones) fly out of the colony to seek for breeding female ants to mate with. They do nothing in their life but eat and mate.
The breeding ants lose their wings after mating.
The males survive only a few weeks, and the queen ants can live up to 30 (!) years (worker ants: 1-3 years)
