For something on your computer (windows) - Right click on the file you wish to put on the desktop, in the drop down menu click on "send to-" then click on desktop in the new drop down menu.
For a web page - Copy the address then right click an empty area on the desktop, click the option new, then click shortcut, paste the address in the proper box and name the shortcut
