they were imported from Euro/Asia, 1910-1912, 500 mute Swans,a small number escaped into the wild. They are destroying the natural habits.
as of 2009, there are around 20,000 of them in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, and Virginia area, They are protected by Maryland. Virginia and the Chesapeake Bay area want a drastic cut in their population. They can not keep up(replanting) with their appetite, an adult can eat 8 pounds of plants a day, pulls the roots up with the plant. If their food supplies runs out, they will move onto farms, crops. Their numbers are increasing at an alarming rate.
They do not give the population per state.
