well a dark horse is something not widely known...A person can be a dark horse, an animal, a political candidate can be a dark horse. So in an auction a dark horse bidder may be a bidder that isnt at the auction(bidding over the phone) or someone who is bidding on a horse that is not well known and there fore a dark horse Hope this helps!!
