      It should be safe to do so.Remember if you decide to turn the water off,you must turn the heater off or you will burn up the heater!

        It would depend on the hardness and mineral content of your water and the type of heating system you have. Some hot water heating systems have very small coils which the water passes through, and they can easily plug with minerals.
