      38.76923'mph .....39X = 42x36. x=42/39 x 36.  x=1.076923x 36.

        I had a difficult time coming up with an answer, Romos, as your exact thought crossed my mind.I guessed that the "asker" meant that if the batter was facing a pitch at 39 mph at 42', then from his point of view, what would be the reaction time for a pitch from 36 feet. There are often comparisons with fast-pitch softball at a distance far less than the 60', 6" in professional baseball. and it's almost as difficult to hit a fastball at x mph in softball as it is to hit a 100 mph fastball in baseball, even taking into account the larger ball.

        I see your point, but velocity is velocity, it decreases.
        Unless there is acceleration, but in that case it would need fuel, which a baseball does not have.

        I hate math, especially story problems, or " word problems, "  b/c they don't give you enough information. This problem does not tell you how much the speed in decreasing per foot----or at what footage it peeked.
