In Florida, tomatoes are grown primarily during the winter as a result of the mild temperatures. Planting begins in late August and harvesting can continue until June for tomatoes planted late. To grow tomatoes in Florida, soil preparation is required because the soil is sandy and doesn't hold moisture. The sandy soil also lacks nutrients that growing tomato plants need in order to thrive.
