The bios on your computer is in the form of a chip on the motherboard, when you 'boot-up' your computer the bios give your computer a test to make sure everything is working properly, it will check memory addresses, everything your computer needs to get going, it will also check with other bio chips on your video card, audio etc, once it has 'trained' your computer it then turns it over to you the user. Basically the bios is the control room of your computer, without it, your computer would not know what is plugged into it. It also retrieves information from CMOS which tells it what time it is.. :)

Computers have a command that you can access your bios to fine tune, overdrive the processor, but unless you know what you are doing, its best to not even go there.
