Does asparagus like a dryer soil?

I have a three year old bed, but my shots are not so many.
I water every other day. I get a lot of shoots that are stringy and want to seed. I want the veggie part.

Not really, When i lived in wyoming asparagus grew wild on all the creek banks, Yummy.
It is a plant that grows on sandy soil, but seems to appreciate a good helping of manure in the autumn.
