    Why, when I get a call, do they only let the phone ring 3 times before hanging up?

    I have an answering machine but I get to the phone before it does and still, I'm greeted with a dial tone...

      Probably because they know you have an answering machine and they don't want to leave a message. Maybe they are calling long distance and don't want a charge for leaving a message. Do you have caller ID? They may think you do and figure you'll see it and know they called. I for one hang up on answering machines. I hate leaving messages.

        You are probably right. I for one will leave a message just to be nice to the people who don't answer...

        Well color me not nice. I usually just call back, like in the old days before answering machines.

        Because the caller is inconsiderate. I was always taught that seven rings was proper.

          Another pet peeve I have is the one that calls a wrong number, then hangs up without an apology (especially at 3am).
