There's no real answer to that. Even a vet will not be able to tell you. Some dogs just like to eat fecal matter. Your puppy is still young enough that you can break him of eating it. Keeping it cleaned up as much as possible will also limit the times you need to stop him from eating it. Tell him no, when you see him wanting to eat it then give him a treat or chew bone instead.

I heard once its because there is something not right in its digestive system, the digestive system is not breaking down its food completely. It thinks its another helping of what it already ate. But this is speculation.. Just a hearsay..
