    I recently asked if a senior citizen in Texas could take coures in a state university free of charge.

    I was told: "I don't think so." The answer was incorrect because it was not research. The correct answer is -
    The governing board of an institution of higher education may allow a senior citizen to enroll for credit in up to six hours of courses offered by the institution each semester or summer term without payment of tuition if space is available.

      It has been two years, hope you are still alive, anyway in most State University systems it is possible.  If there is space, the course can be taken for no credit, and the student would otherwise be like everyone else.
