I have read that one shouldn't shear a long-haired dog. You might think he will be cooler with the hair gone, but the contrary is true. The hair is an insulation for the dog. If you still feel it would be best to cut the dog's hair, I would think sheep shears would work best--or one of those machines used to shave off a horse's mane.
A dog groomer can do this also.
