My dad used to call me "flip" because I was an angry child and got mad alot.
He also called me "punk" because I was jaundiced at birth and had orange-ish skin color.
My ex-husband was called "Twig" because his last name was Branche.
Those are examples of nicknames, words that reflect something about the person but have nothing to do with his name.
Bob (Robert), Tom (Thomas), Maggie (Margaret), Dave (David), Betty (Elizabeth) are not nicknames. At least, not in my mind.
