      Kidney stones exist before they start the exit process, so I don't know that a definitive answer can be given to your question.   My 23-year-old son has suffered from kidney stones over the past 3-4 years.   He has actually been given morphine at the emergency room, so this tells me that a kidney stone trying to escape is an incredibly painful experience.
