When my kids were in elementary school, they made dioramas. One I remember was from a scene in a literature book.
Using a shoebox (not the top, the box part), we turned it onto its side. Then we created a "scene" inside the box (our stood horizontally). We painted the "walls" of the box and glued little cut out pictures (from magazines) on the walls.
We made a "person" using masking tape, rolling it into a torso, arms, legs, and head, putting gauze around the parts and coloring them to make a person. We added "furniture" to the "room", a "rug" on the "tile" floor, and other little things to finish off the scene.
Finally, my son wrote on an index card the part of the book his diorama represented.
That was a diorama.......when my kids were in elementary school. Does that help?
