    H stands for hard and the numbers are degrees of hardness - 1 being the softest. These pencils are most often using for mathematical purposes, for example drawing graphs


    B stands for black and again the numbers stand for degrees of 'blackness' - 2B being more 'black' and softer than just B. The pencils are used by artists
