      Try adding a little bi-carb soda, (bicarbonate of soda) that will soften anything, including tough meat

          yes, I follow the directions on the bag, bring to boil for a few minutes, the soak overnight, I have not added salt or acids because I read those can keep them from softening. Then I crock pot cook again with fresh water.
